Damien Sotter is the Managing Partner of Beef Genetics - Supplies and Solutions based in Bathurst, NSW. He holds a Bachelor of Applied Science in Systems Agriculture, completed at the University of Western Sydney-Hawkesbury and he is a Fellow of the Australian Rural Leadership Foundation after completing Course 17 of the Australian Rural Leadership Program in 2011.
Damien has been breeding beef cattle and working in the beef industry continuously since 1989. He has been successfully performing Artificial Insemination since 1993, freeze branding since 2000 and pregnancy testing since 2002. From 1997 to 2013 he managed The Meadows Angus at Oberon on the Central Tablelands of NSW. During this time additional skills in management, pastures, nutrition, animal health, breeding and genetics were gained. The Meadows stud and breeding herd of 650 cows was built up by Damien eventually selling over 50 bulls annually including an on property sale, large lines of weaner steers and feature lines of breeding females. Also since 2005, his sales, communication, leadership and business management skills have been further refined through working with clients in the cattle breeding industry in the operation of the Beef Genetics busines. Some current clients of Beef Genetics include Millah Murrah, Hazeldean, Te Mania and Banquet Angus Studs. With several recent beef industry tours to New Zealand, Canada and USA, Damien is also up to date in the world scene for British bred and hybrid beef production. Expansive knowledge gains in the areas of management, cattle handling and behaviour, animal nutrition, marketing and production systems are some of the outcomes from these trips. These are in addition to the obvious areas of cattle breeding, genetics and networking that form the basis of the direction and learning outcomes of these tours. At a local level, Damien has worked extensively over the years in many areas of the Australian beef production zones namely NSW, VIC, King Island (TAS), SA and NT. His team is focused on Beef Artificial Insemination specialising in synchronised and fixed time programs and Ultrasound Pregnancy Scanning and foetal aging from 28 days of pregnancy. Damien has been able to meet and engage with some of the world leaders in Artificial Insemination and Advanced Reproductive Technology in beef cattle. The likes of Dr Rick Funston, Reproductive Physiologist from Nebraska State University and Dr Cliff Lamb, Assistant Director and Professor at the University of Florida have added greatly to our knowledge and helped us develop some of the most advanced and successful Fixed Time AI protocols used in Australia today. They form part of a network that is allowing Beef Genetics to provide beef breeders with the latest available information, technology and answers to questions to stay at the top end of the industry. |
